Dental Crown Benefits
Abilene Dental Crowns
Dental crowns can be used to preserve and restore the functionality of your teeth. Crowns, also known as caps, are made of gold, all porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or a composite material. They are custom made to fit over the patient's tooth to provide it with additional strength and stability. Abilene cosmetic dentist Tim Simpson provides more in-depth information about the dental crowns procedure, including its benefits and uses, in this blog post.
Dental Crown Uses
Dental crowns have many uses, including the restoration of teeth that are:
- Badly damaged from decay
- Cracked
- Broken
- Worn down
- Not stable due to a large filling or multiple fillings
- Supporting a dental bridge
- Misshaped
- Discolored
- Straighten misaligned front teeth
The Dental Crowns Procedure
Patients that are suitable candidates for the dental crowns procedure will need to schedule two treatment appointments. During the first appointment, Dr. Simpson will thoroughly clean the affected tooth and remove all signs of damage and decay. Then, he will take an impression of the tooth using a molding material. The impression allows us to fabricate a custom crown that will fit snuggly over your natural tooth. Because it typically takes at least two weeks for the crown to be made, Dr. Simpson will place a temporary crown over your tooth at the end of your first treatment appointment. When the permanent crown is ready, you will return to our office where Dr. Simpson will secure the permanent crown to your tooth with a bonding material. Finally, the crown is adjusted to produce a comfortable bite.
Our Abilene dental crown patients reap many benefits from the procedure, including an improved appearance and restored functionality. Some patients may experience some tooth sensitivity in the treatment area for a few days after the procedure, but this typically fades. If you experience prolonged tooth pain after treatment, contact our office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Simpson. Your bite may need to be readjusted to provide you with increased comfort.
